Inportant Steps: 1. Keep hydrated: you should drink 8 oz of fluid every 1-2 hrs this helps to loosen congestion 2. Rest 3. Use a humidifier: keep it running all night 4. Avoid irritants. Pollution, cigarettes, etc 5. Take cough medicine: only if the cough becomes disruptive to everyday life, because they are cough suppressants. 6. Use an expectorant: example Mucinex (guaifenesin) to dec risk of pneumonia 7. Take a pain reliever.

Yes: As most forms of bronchitis tend to be of an infectious cause, anywhere you might pick up infections, such as stores, etc., can make you prone to picking up any respiratory illness.

Not directly: Interesting question. Airway inflammation can be helped with cool humidified air, like when an asthmatic goes outside and has some relief of their symptoms at night. I suppose if you're eating ice cream, some of the upper airway inflammation that may come with bronchitis may be relieved with just the direct contact with ice cream. Not sure i'd depend on it for a cure though.

Does smoking increase the risks of bronchitis?

Yes: Absolutely. Smoking reduces the number of cilia in the airway, the tiny structures that help to clear away airway debris, as well as produces the mucous that traps bacterial and dust in the airway. When you burn those away with cigarette smoke, this makes you much more susceptible to all airway illnesses, including bronchitis.

Depends: This is only answered by the etiology of the bronchitis. Viral bronchitis, the most common, usually resolves within 1-2 weeks, but there can be ongoing residual cough that takes weeks to months to resolve. Bacterial bronchitis responds to antibiotics, with the same post-infectious course. Inflammatory and asthmatic bronchitis can go months, depending on the level of control.
