Is azithromycin good for an abscess?

It can be effective: Azithromycin (z-pack, zithromax) can be effective for oral infections. It is usually not a first line choice, but may be used if the patient is allergic to the primary antibiotics (amoxicillin, clindamycin) or if the primary antibiotics are not effective.

Only sometimes: Many skin abscesses can be cured with incision and drainage alone. Most skin abscesses are caused by the bacteria staphylococcus aureus. Most strains of this bacteria are resistant to zithromax. If it is MRSA septra/bactrim or Doxycycline are the usual oral antibiotics used. If mssa oral dicloxicillin or Keflex are often used.
