Inflammed veins?: Usually the superficial veins in the foot are not a major concern. Such veins can become inflamed and feel painful. Such a condition is called superficial phlebitis. There usually is some form of redness of the area. Veins have nerves and can be painful when maximally dilated. Any kind if inflammation in the area of pain can also cause an increase in circulation to and from the area.

Get checked: Consider seeing the podiatrist to evaluate the foot properly. Inflamed vessels could be a reason for the pronounced veins but you may want to have the other soft tissue structures in the area also checked (ligaments, muscles and tendons) in case there may be a problem there that may be contributing or causing the swelling.
