Depends on diet: Folic acid dramatically decreases risk of a group of birth defects known as neural tube defects. It is most important in the first 6 weeks of pregnancy and is best started before conception. However, the vast majority of women who don't take it in early pregnancy have healthy babies. Many foods (esp. Wheat) are enriched with Folic Acid and many foods (esp. Greens and beans) supply folate (folic acid).
