Brain & spine: Folic acid is needed for fetal brain and spine development. Without it, there is a risk of neurological damage when the baby is born. Also not taking frolic acid is associated with high risk of spina bifida in the fetus, where the spine does not close properly and dies not protect the spinal cord, leading to a spinal deformity that can be cosmetically visible too. Take the folic acid.

Pregnancy: To be true the major value of Folic Acid supplementation is before you get pregnant to preven neural tube defects. If you didn't take it around the time you were pregnant, the efficacy of it is literally 0. It's still recommended but again the efficacy of it after conception is much less so.

Neural tube defects: Folate is necessary for many metabolic processes for you and your baby. However, folate deficiency in early pregnancy (first month) can be related to neural tube defects - problems with brain, spine and spinal cord. Luckily, many foods are fortified with folate (folic acid) as most women are unaware they are pregnant until after the first month. Take a good prenatal vitamin if you are not alread.
