6 seconds: With the sophisticated blood sugar monitors we have these days, you can have a finger poke, put a micro-drop of blood on a test strip and have a blood sugar reading in 6 seconds. A blood sugar greater than 140 is diagnostic of diabetes if you are fasting; a blood sugar greater than 200 is diagnostic of diabetes if you have eaten a meal within 2 hours.
