Let me explain: If you have symptoms most likely the osteophytes will be the due to arthritis in the joint and this have to be corrected by surgery (hip replacement) or some time with arthroscopy.

Ask the treating doc: You and your mother should ask this question to the doctor whom she has seen. I am sure he will be happy to explain the type of surgery and what it involves. He may be proposing arthroscopic surgery which uses a lighted tube to look inside the joint and clean up any wear and tear.
