100.4 F = 38 C: Check out http://www.Aafp.Org/afp/2007/0615/p1805.Html. We tolerate higher temperatures in older children who don't appear "toxic". But younger children bear more involved evaluation since their immune systems aren't mature & they haven't received complete set of vaccinations. However, even healthy appearing children w/102.2 f = 39 c need further evaluation. Btw these temperatures are rectal.

Relative term: I am much more interested in how a 1 yo looks and acts than the temperature.While 100.4 is considered fever and quite worrisome (er visit) for a 4 week old, i don't consider anything under 103 high for a 1 yo. Pair that with a kid who is drinking well and playiing some, and s/he is likely to have something minor.If the some kid hass 100 and won't eat, drink or play and i want to see him/her soon.
