Sometimes unknown: While all of the conditions you mention can contribute to strokes, some patients will have a stroke for no explainable reason. You can consider it bad luck, but it happens. Make sure he does his therapy to maintain what he can, and help him to relearn to use what he has lost.

Other causes: Other causes can be a hypercoaguable state (easy blood clot formation), homocysteine problems, high lipoprotein a, cardiac arrhythmias, undiagnosed malignanices. Your neurologist will do further testing to see if he has any of these problems. Make sure he gets his rehab and continues his healthy lifestyle.
