A member asked:

Are two couples carrying thalessimia trait able to have children?

2 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Yes,but: A couple, each of which carries trait, will have a 25% risk with each conception of producing a child with thal major. They would have a 50% risk for trait and a 25% chance of a kid free of either. Current chorionic villus sampling techniques would allow prenatal detection before 12 wks.

Yes: When two members of a couple both have the same type of thalassemia trait, there is a 25% chance of having an affected baby and a 50% chance of having a baby with trait. This means that up to 1 in 4 children might have thalassemia. They should see a genetic counselor and talk to their obstetrician. In addition, they might talk to persons with thalassemia to learn more about life with the disease.
