A member asked:

For what reasons might a person with leukaemia have problems with increased risk of infection?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

At least 2 reasons..: People with leukemia have diseased white blood cells. White blood cells are important in immune responses against viruses & bacteria. If white blood cells aren't working correctly, these patient are prone to infections. In addition, people with leukemia are often treated with drugs that suppress the bone marrow. The bone marrow is the source of normal white blood cells. This may contribute.
