Simple: If you have pain, then you know that it is not normal. Healthy teeth and gums don't normally hurt. Since you can't treat these problems yourself, you should make an appointment to be evaluated. All the best...

You should go : Pain or no pain, you should keep your dental check ups every six months.

If in doubt...: ...Go for a consultation. Generally there are three types of oral pain: 1) pain that is transient and goes away permanently. 2) pain that is transient and goes away temporarily. 3) pain that doesn't go away or gets worse. Without seeking professional help, you could hope for scenario 1), but you risk putting yourself through more pain and may limit your treatment options and worsen prognosis.

See a Dentist ASAP: If you have a toothache, you may have a cavity or advanced gum disease. A tooth pain won't go away without treatment and the infection may spread to your jaw, cheeks, sinus and to other areas of your head and neck. You can use Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain control. See a dentist ASAP for assessment and treatment.
