See a retina special: A new or worse floater requires an urgent dilated retinal exam to rule out a serious issue like retinal tear or detachment. An old floater can be removed with vitrectomy surgery, but this is often deemed too invasive for a benign condition.

Surgery: It is not advisable to take the risk of surgery, unless the floaters are causing a serious problem. If you have difficulty reading, or the floater affects your feeling safe driving, then a vitrectomy is a good option. Complications are uncommon or rare, but can lead to vision loss, so decide carefully.
