Months or years: Floaters can settle to the bottom of the vitreous and become less noticeable, or the brain can "filter" them out... Or, they may persist indefinitely. Usually they are harmless albeit annoying. If associated with flashes of light, a loss of field of vision, or if there is a change in the nature of the floaters, see an ophthalmologist right away. For severe intractable floaters surgery can help

Floaters: Most eye floaters are caused by age-related changes that occur as the jelly-like substance (vitreous) inside your eyes becomes more liquid. Microscopic fibers within the vitreous tend to clump and can cast tiny shadows on your retina, which appear to you as floaters. If you notice a sudden increase in eye floaters, contact an eye specialist immediately — especially if you also see light flashes.
