While wound is open: 1st- and 2nd-degree burns are partial-thickness wounds and heal on their own in less than 3 weeks. 3rd-degree burns are full-thickness wounds which are the ones that are skin grafted for healing. Skin grafts can be applied at any point that the wound is still open and not yet healed.
