Nonspecific: The ESR or erythrocyte sedimentation rate is the rate at which red blood cells sink to the bottom of the tube given in mm/hr. It is a non-specific measure of inflammation that has been around since 1897. The ESR tends to rise with age and is higher in women and when anemia is present. There are many reasons for an elevated esr, so the test is not useful for indicating a specific diagnosis.
