ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) is an old test used to detect inflammatory condition. Unless the rate is very high, the meaning of a slightly high rate like your son's result, is very limited. You should not pay much attention about this test but a rheumatology consultation is appropriate if your son has extremity (joint?) pain but pediatrician could not make a diagnosis.

An elevated ESR indicates inflammation and long with limb pain, it is appropriate to see a rheumatologist to rule out joint inflammation.
