Premedication: Premedication starting a day before wisdom teeth extractions with a mild steroid (decadron) and an anti-inflammatory (motrin) will do wonders at keeping swelling and pain under control after the procedure. Review this with your treating dentist.

Depending on the: Surgical difficulty and other factors, some symptoms can persist up to 10 days or more. Upper wisdom teeth seem to resolve faster after surgery than lowers. With medication properly prescribed and taken, the pain can be managed well and my patients describe only mild symptoms after 3-4 days. There are so many variables in the answer, so ask your dental surgeon to comment.

Varies: The perception and response to any painful stimulus varies from person to person. Some patients have 4 wisdom teeth removed and take nothing more than an otc med. While others may require several days of strong pain meds.
