A member asked:

Is it unusual to have wisdom teeth extracted that aren't causing any problems?

Depends: The recommendation for removal of wisdom teeth or not is dependent upon many criteria. The age of the patient, position of the teeth (erupted and functional vs impacted), and potential for problems are some things we evaluate. It is preferable to have impacted wisdom teeth that are indicated for removal before the teeth are fully developed and symptomatic.

Maybe: It depends on the situation. The wisdom teeth may not be causing any issues now but may cause issues in the future. It is very challenging to predict if the wisdom teeth will erupt perfectly straight into the mouth. Often patients have limited space in the jaws for wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth tend to lead to infections, shifting of the front teeth, cavities, gum issues. Contact your dds.

Yes: Due to centuries of physical changes, the average persons jaw size is smaller than the jaw size of pre-historic humans, therefore, although many are born to have 32 teeth, they don't have enough room for that many teeth and as a result, the wisdom teeth either come in at a poor position or are locked in below the gum line. In either case, talk to your dentist as it is best to have them removed.
