How much pain should i expect from having gums trimmed?

Not bad at all: Most people coming back from periodontal surgery for their first post-op tell me that it was not as bad as they thought; and many will say that nothing ever bothered them at all. And of course, during the treatment, you should be numb.

Easy: If the gum is trimmed without removing the bone underneath, the healing is uneventful and easy providing acceptable or good oral hygiene. Bone trimming may cause pain since bone modeling is expected (controlled by pain meds).
