A member asked:

Can atrial septal defects and atrial septal aneurysms get bigger? can they just now show up after having a baby if so does it mean it's bigger now?

No: They don't get bigger but they can just show up. What happens is, they may be quite small and only shunt blood when you cough, bear down, or have a baby. ASD and asas are something you're born with - no doubt it's been there since you were a baby. Echo can determine the size and whether closure is necessary.

Yes, Yes and maybe: Atrial septal defects and the flow through them can increase over time. Changes in blood volume and pressures can unmask a septal defect, and make it worse. The good news is that after her pregnancy, it is also possible for it to get better over time. I would see your cardiologist about this.
