It really depends: On how much shunting is occurring through the hole & if there are resultant adverse effects...E.G. Pulmonary hypertension...Often times these are not fixed.

Depends on flow: It is not just the size. If the shunting between the two sides results in ratio greater than 1.5 and you have symptoms you need the defect closed. Occasionally people get rhythm problems or thrombus formation due to atrial septal aneurysm and may need surgical treatment.
