Yes but very rarely: It is possible to have an infection in the heart which weakens the atrial septum (causing an aneurysm) or even creates a complete holes (atrial septal defects). This is a very rare finding though and the illness that caused it is generally quite severe. ASDs and atrial septal aneurysms are very common though and most just occur during fetal (i.e. baby) development .
