A member asked:

I'm 11 weeks pregnant and i was wondering if not taking folic acid every day will cause the baby to have down syndrome or any other health issues?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Probably not: While Folic Acid is recommended during pregnancy, the lack of supplement does not cause defects. Supplements decrease the risk that your child will have a neural tube defect such as spina bifida. It has no bearing on the risk for down's.
