Not the key: A sensible diet with relatively little animal fat and a reasonable amount of fiber is a good choice for almost everyone. Different physicians and different politicians will give you different instructions on just who needs to eliminate just what from the diet; there's not a lot of hard science. I'd urge you instead to focus on physical fitness and eat sensibly. Eager to hear others' comments.

Trans fats & sugars: Cholesterol does not cause heart disease but inflammation does, so whether cholesterol is high or low it's best to avoid foods that cause inflammation- esp. Trans fats (fried foods) and sugars! see http://www.Sott.Net/article/242516-heart-surgeon-speaks-out-on-what-really-causes-heart-disease & http://www.Cbn.Com/cbnnews/healthscience/2012/october/cholesterol-myth-what-really-causes-heart-disease/.

Many ways: There are multle ways to reduce cholesterol. I reduced mine by changing my diet and exercising more. This is the best way. Eliminate fried foods, foods high in saturated fats and eat more veggies & wild fish like salmon. If you can't do it with food, you. Ay need a statin to reduce it. Some try red yeast rice or fish oil supplements, or even lovaza, but nothing beats dietary changes and exercise.

High chol & TGs: Avoid fast food that tends to b deep fried; choose lean meats, oily fish (salmon), foods high in omega-3 fats. Sugary, high glycemic carbs tend to raise tgs. Increase dietary fiber (absorbs fats) meds: omega-3 supplements (1000 mg enteric coated, 3-4 a day); rx for "statin" cholesterol-lowering agent from doc; some also recommend niacin/a fibrate to help lower tgs. Crestor (rosuvastatin) works well 4 both.

A 48-year-old member asked:
What sorts of food should I eat to help reduce cholesterol?

High fiber diet: A high fiber diet lowers cholesterol. A fiber diet means plenty of fruits and vegetables. Whole grains and legumes. You need about 35 grams of fiber a day. Beans have 6 g a serving. Veggies are about 3-4 g a serving. Fruits are 2-3 g a serving. You would need at least 5-7 fruits and veggies a day. Beans and whole grain rice would add fiber to your diet. Dairy, meat, chicken, fish have no fiber.
