Mentality change: You are at a perfect age to "take charge" of your health. Reducing calories ingested (eating better and less) and increasing calorie expenditure (physical activity) is the only way. Avoid meds unless prescribed. Use a food journal with calorie counting to help u control how many calories you eat. Remember it is a "lifetime change" so don't rush. You can do it if u change the way you see food.

Stop sugar: I agree with the other doctors and would add this: the easiest thing to remember is to avoid sugar. That means all candies, pasteries, ice cream, sugary sodas, pancakes, etc. And anything with high fructose corn syrup. Remember that white flour (bread, doughnuts, pretzels) converts quickly to sugar after you eat it. Eat fresh colorful fruits and vegetables instead.
