Usually comes & goes: Nobody knows what causes geographic tongue. It tends to appear and disappear. Usually no rx is required, but there are topicals to help if there's discomfort.

Can happen: Geographic tongue will change its appearance over time and may even go away. This is nothing to worry about. It is a benign condition.

Yes to both,variable: The cause of geographic tongue is unknown, but is thought to be related to an immune system error and may have a genetic component as it tends to run in families. It's benign and nothing to be concerned about although the tongue may be more sensitive at times. It is variable as to duration, location and extent and no way to predict.
