It can be helped: Carpal tunnel present when you are young and can persist at a low level or be intermitent for many years. It often becomes more symptomatic as we age. If splinting is no longer helping the numbness, you should obtain some nerve conduction studies to assess the severity of your nerve compression and seek appropriate treatment from a hand surgeon.
