Dr. Aletha Tippett

In general, aging can cause some memory loss, but other health problems (malnutrition, heart disease, depression, etc), inactivity, lack of mental stimulation & social isolation affect memory. The elderly typically have more health problems, less exercise & less social support than younger people. Keep your memory sharp w/ exercise (mental & physical), a balanced diet & by maintaining friendships.

Not directly: The pituitary is far enough from the brain that a tumor would not directly affect the brain. However, a pituitary tumor can cause abnormal hormone levels, that could affect concentration, judgment, and memory.

Many: Anti- anxiety medications like benzodiazepines (xanax). Several medications are problems for elderly, antihistamines, medications for overactive bladder. "statins" for cholesterol have caused reversible memory loss so severe, doctors thought it was alzheimer's. Ask your doctor before stopping medications, esp. The cholesterol and anxiety medications. The memory loss is reversible.
