What are the effects of oxygen deprivation at birth for a premie?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Varies with degree: The normal fetal blood oxygen content in the womb is a fraction of what is considered normal after an hour of age. Resuscitation programs for infants and premi's now use room air initially to mimic the natural transition to air breathing but use extra oxygen if there is poor response.Long term oxygen deprivation may result in brain injury, circulatory problems and or shock. It varies with amount.
