"Thinning" of ...: White matter with increased fluid content, which accounts for the t2 hyper intensity. Most physicians feel this is due to small artery infractions in subcortical white matter. Although these findings are MRI are age related (more common in the elderly), this process is associated with chronic hypertension. Risk factors also include heart disease, diabetes and smoking.
