What's the trigger?: For many people the chemical sodium lauryl sulfate or sls is the trigger for ulcers. For others it may be a flavoring like mint or cinnamon. There are many companies that make toothpastes these days that still have the benefits of Fluoride with no sls detergent. Biotene, pronamel, sensodyne all make a version of paste without sls.

Yes and no...: You probably have a sensitivity to something, maybe your toothpaste or something else you put in your mouth such as mouth rinse or food. Consult with your dentist and explore what has changed in you diet and hygiene routine parallel to the increase in canker sores. You should be able to reduce or eliminate the problem with the right changes and/or prescriptions, and these will be specific to you.

May not matter: While certain individuals may have specific ingredients in toothpastes or foods trigger the formation of canker sores, that is only one potential cause. Stress and local irritation even from hard foods or tooth brushing may also trigger canker sores. Therefore, even using no toothpaste may not reduce the occurrence of canker sores. Certain medical conditions are also implicated.

Yes: Look for toothpaste that does not contain the ingredient sls (sodium laurel sulfate), which is a foaming agent in many pastes. Look for rembrandt tp for canker sores, biotene dry mouth tp, or tom's of maine sls-free tp.
