A member asked:

Why does being overweight lead to a higher respiratory and heart rate?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Complex question: The increase body mass, increase o2 consumption and increase co2 production will produce an increase minute ventilation to maintain normocapnia. Obese patients will increase mv by rapid shallow breaths. Increase heart rate is multifactorial but one explanation will be that any increase in cardiac output by severily obese person will be achieve mainly by increasing heart rate.
