I just got a blood test & was told my thyroid level was 14.9. i have been taking bc for 1 yr. could it have triggered it? thyroid runs in family also.

Unlikely: 14.9 is high. You most likely have hashimoto's thyroid disease. I recommend completing the test with free T4 and thyroid peroxidase antibodies.

Depends upon test: If the test was a t4, it can be artificially elevated by bcp, although thyroid doesn't change, only the test. Other thyroid tests are not affected by estrogens/bcp's. If the test was a tsh, then your thyroid level is low, and further evaluation is needed and possibly treatment with brand name T4 replacement. Check w/your doctor.

Which test?: A TSH of 14.9 is high and indicates low thyroid levels. Bc pills would not be a cause of this. A total T4 (or just "t4") of 14.9 is also high, and indicates high thyroid levels. However, women on bc pills sometimes need T4 levels in this range to balance out binding protein changes caused by the bc pills & may be just fine with this level. More tests are needed - check w/ your doctor!
