A member asked:

I have had hsv-1 orally since i was young. do the antibodies provide some protection from it migrating to my genitals or other parts of my body?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Doesn't migrate: The majority of people have oral herpes 1, and it normally does not migrate to other areas. Most people with oral cold sores don't get cold sores elsewhere, although they can catch herpes 2 in the genitals (or other places) even though they already have herpes 1. If cold sores are frequent or bad, just ask the doctor for preventive medicine (an antiviral drug to prevent the cold sores).
