Cause?: You cannot remedy the pain without knowing the cause? Is it muscular? Did you strain a muscle? Is it related to your spine and its joints? (disc?) is it related to eating (gallbladder)? Is it associated with bladder infections or fevers (kidney infection)? If unsure, see your primary to figure out what is causing it then you can figure out how to remedy it.

You Need a Diagnosis: Especially if the pain is "horrible" you need a workup by a physician - start with your primary physician - to rule out serious causes of back pain such as aortic aneurisms, kidney infection, tumors, gallbladder problems etc. The most likely cause of back pain is not the above, but an appropriate work-up by a board-certified physician is crucial and necessary before considering treatment.
