If at all ill - ER!: If a newborn without a wet diaper for 24 hours is acting at all sick or lethargic, go immediately to see a physician. Newborns can get very sick very fast and one sign can be no urine output. It is unusual for a healthy newborn not to have a wet diaper for this long if breast or bottle feeding normally. They often have a bowel movement and urine after eating as a natural reflex.

Abnormal ?Dehydrated: At 5-age-days your baby certainly should not go 24 hours without urination. Check baby's soft spot to see if depressed in which case baby may be dehydrated and may need medical care. You may not be producing enough milk if breast feeding, and baby isn't getting enough fluid. Baby may need supplemental formula or pedialyte. Please call your baby's pediatrician/primary care provider.
