Slowly: See your doctor for guidance. What i often recommend is cutting total daily dose in half every week until taking 1/2 tab (whatever dose that is) daily, then drop to every other day for about 2 weeks then stop. You still may have some withdrawal symptoms but not as severe.

Slowly: Dr. Jones' answer is a good one. In addition, if you find that you can not succeed in tapering the Xanax (alprazolam) (the discontinuation syndrome is intense anxiety) you can talk to your doctor about switching to a long-acting anxiolytic such as tranxene to make the taper easier.

Slowly with help: Xanax (alprazolam) withdrawal takes time and monitoring by you doctor. Tell they you need help to get off of the medication. They will work with you to accomplish your goal.
