Pain meds: There is, unfortunately, no pill to fix a herniated disk. However, over the counter nsaids (ex: ibuprofen) can help with the pain. If you do not want to or are not eligible for surgery, you can always visit a physiatrist (rehab medicine doctor). They will be able to help manage your herniated disk and associated symptoms without surgery.

Sure: There is no way to reverse the wear and tear on the disc, but there is hope. For "over the counter" remedies you can try oral anti-inflammatory medicines like Ibuprofen or naprosyn (naproxen). You can also try an inversion table for some temporary "disc decompression" which sometimes provides long lasting help. Your best option will be exercise. Look into a beginners hatha yoga class for strength and support.
