Pain: A dry socket would be a sharp pain, particularly when you breathe in. It is caused by the clot that was formed after the extraction coming loose. This exposes the bone and causes pain. Return to the dentist who did the extraction and they can place material that will help alleviate the pain and help the area heal.

Pain and foul taste: Most patients who are diagnosed witn a dry socket complain of varying degrees of pain and a foul taste, usually within 2-5 days following the extraction of the tooth. In my practice, the majority of dry sockets occur with extractions in the lower jaw.
