A member asked:

I have 2 disks that have herniated & collapsed, causing pain & sciatica, does that indicate my back is unstable? been thru all non open treat for 2yrs

It does not mean: That your back is unstable just for the reasons described. Degenerative changes can lead to instability patterns that are best appreciated with standing x-rays espcially combined with bending or flexion /extension views. Further treatment options are dependent on multiple factors espcially if considering a possible surgery. See a spine surgeon for an opinion if considering that alternative.

Family practice : Everyone is different. You may consider seeing a specialist to find out for sure. Surgery is always an option but needs to be a last resort. I have had good results with decompression therapy.

Sciatica: Pain in the distribution as you suggested describes the pattern of the nerve that travels in the leg called the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is not the cause of the pain source, it is the result of an irritated nerve typically in the lumbar spine (low back) which are caused by herniated disks, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease requiring further evaluation by a spine specialist.
