Degenerative Joint : Jra & RA & other immune mediated arthritic entities like psoriatic arthritis all can have degenerative effects within joints, & the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) is no exception. Some clinical signs of degenrative disease processes are limited range of motion, crepitus on opening & closing, deviation on opening, joint pain, pops/clicks. There are a host of radiographic signs too (mri or ct).

Child with JRA: She needs to learn to manage the amount of jaw opening she does on a daily basis to prevent further irritation to the jaw joints. Putting her finger on her tongue will stop a yawn. Also a thin plastic mouth guard may give her haw joints relief at night by "unloading" the joints and let them rest.
