If methotrexate were taken along with folic acid does it have the same side effect of just taking methotrexate?

Yes: Frolic acid is given to possibly reduce the risk of Methotrexate toxicity.

Fewer side effects: Folic acid reduces side effects of Methotrexate and does not reduce effectiveness. In 2000, a meta-analysis of 12 studies including 307 RA patients on Methotrexate showed that patients taking Folic Acid had significantly fewer GI side effects but had the same control of their arthritis. There wasn't enough data to determine whether it was effective to prevent abnormal blood counts or not.

They should not be..: They shouldn't be taken orally simultaneously, since the same transporter protein takes both into the blood, and the folate (folic acid) would overwhelm the dose of methotrexate. However, folate (folic acid) supplementation is necessary when on mtx therapy. The oral issue i mentioned is one of many reasons that Methotrexate should be taken subcutaneously!
