Good question: I don't know. However, surgeons take pride in their experience, that makes them not likely to exaggerate it, since exaggerating the experience means that he/she is not proud of it. But, you can always verify the years of practice and to some extent the reputation online.

Good question!: I don't really think there is a way. Consider that a surgeon may perform a good operation poorly thousands of time or very well just a few times...So which surgeon would you be more comfortable with? At some point, you have to trust in and feel comfortable with your surgeon overall. This is much more important than the number of procedures the surgeon has performed.

Ask your primary. : If your primary refers a lot of patients to that surgeon he/she will know how many gallbladder's , appy a etc. the surgeon does ( roughly). Is the primary happy with the results ? Any concerns, complaints from patients. You may also check the state medical board for 'actions' against that surgeon. Lawsuits. But really, of you don't trust them , see someone else

What is truth?: Quite frankly, there is no practical way of validating whether any physician, surgeon or not, is telling you the truth. What you can do however, is seeking a second, or even a third opinion gives you more direction.

Discernment : It is hard to double check something like that. The surgeon them self might not actually be quite aware. Probably what you are really asking is whether or not the surgeon has sufficient experience in the procedure being proposed. If you don't feel real comfortable with the answer they give you, I would not really push for a specific number, I would trust your discernment and go elsewhere.
