Tonsillitis: Tonsillitis can be caused by viral or bacterial infections.Viral infections are not treated with antibiotics. The number of adults with chronic tonsillitis is on the rise because adults never had tonsils removed as children. Treatment is sometimes surgery even in adults.Adult patients who had disabling sore throat more than 3 times per year may require tonsillectomy. If recurrent, see physician.
