Debate re niacin: Check out http://www.Mayoclinic.Com/health/niacin/cl00036 for info re niacin, a b vitamin, that is available in various forms. Some require processing in liver, a consequence which is flushing & increase in HDL (good cholesterol). However, non-flush Niacin which has already been processed doesn't cause flush or raise hdl. Recent studies suggest no benefit from taking Niacin (http://goo.Gl/uqixz).

Helpful if pellagra: Recent trials of high dose Niacin (2 grams daily) have not shown benefit for people with high triglycerides, high LDL (bad) or low HDL (good) cholesterol. Heart attacks and strokes were not reduced. And Niacin increased the risk of diabetes, gout, hepatitis, peptic ulcers and hemorrhage. Low doses of Niacin (under 10 mg) can treat pellagra. Best to avoid high doses.

Many ways,it depends: Niacin plays a key role as an essential cofactor for many enzymes involved in converting food to energy, fat metabolism, detoxification & nervous system function. It lowers cholesterol and often helps anxiety and osteoarthritis (esp. As niacineamide), reduces cravings for alcohol and may help schizophrenia. It is easy to get the rda in our diets but many people benefit from taking larger amounts.
