Hard to say: It's hard to say with certainty without examining your knee. Could be varicose veins, could be a bakers cyst. It may be a deep vein thrombosis which is a serious condition. You should see a doctor to have this evaluated.

Yes, normal: Varicose veins are veins under high pressure. This causes inflammation / pain, especially at the end of the day if you have been active on your feet. The "bruising" is most likely the network of capillaries veins under the skin that are dilated. A simple ultrasound can help diagnose this. Compressions socks will help keep your symptoms at bay.
