A member asked:

If you go off lithium properly, but then go back on it a month or two later. is it true that it may not have the same effect as it originally did?

No : While I am not sure how to go off lithium "properly", there is no evidence that stopping and restarting the medication leads to a decrease in the medication's effectiveness. However, if you are treating a mood disorder, like bipolar disorder, every episode of a mood problem makes it harder in the future to treat it. So it may appear that the medicine stops working but it is just harder to treat.
