Till swelling stops: Ice helps reduce swelling, pain, and inflammation. You should ice an injury until it is no longer swelling up on you, until then follow the rice rule (rest, ice, compression, elevation ) make sure to put a moist cloth between ankle and ice bag to prevent frost bite, i usually recommend 10 min every hour when you are able.
