Over 150: If you have been diagnosed with gdm, you can safely take glucophage (metformin) but if not controlled you would need insulin. If your readings were consistently above 150 you would need insulin.

Vary: The recommended blood glucose levels for diabetes vary based on the time of day it is and how long it has been since one has eaten. Upon waking, healthy blood sugar ranges between 80 mg/dl (4.4 mmol/l) and 210 mg/dl (11.6 mmol/l), as well as before meals. As gestational diabetes, if your diet fails to control your diet, you will need to take Insulin shots throughout the rest of your pregnancy.

<100 fasting <140@1h: I start gestational diabetics on Insulin if their fasting sugars are consistently > 100 and/or 1 hour post meals > 140. If diet & exercise don't improve glycemic control, i start Insulin twice a day consisting of nph & reg humulin (insulin) prior to breakfast & dinner. I also have them meet each visit with a diabetic educator & dietician to improve compliance.
